Remembering 9/11
Everyone holds a vivid memory of where they were when the tragic news struck. For me, it was during my freshman year orientation at high school. The pain, disbelief, and fear reflected in everyone's eyes were palpable.
To commemorate our 10th anniversary, my wife and I chose to celebrate in NYC. Equipped with my camera, a couple of batteries, and a few SD cards, I aimed to capture as much of the experience as possible. While contemplating which part of the city to explore next, we found ourselves at the 9/11 memorial. If you haven't been, standing at ground zero, a site of immense devastation and loss, is a deeply surreal and humbling experience.
In the header above, you'll see a picture I took on that day. I captured it in the moment without much thought. However, during later editing, a hunch prompted me to search for the name in the picture. It was Jeremy Logan Glick. He, along with his fellow passengers, was aware of the earlier attacks at the World Trade Center and bravely attempted to thwart the hijacking. In their struggle to reclaim the aircraft, it tragically crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, claiming the lives of all 33 passengers, seven crew members, and the four hijackers.
Reading the details of their heroic acts nearly brought me to tears. I felt fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time to snap that photo, and out of all the names at the memorial, I had captured his. It's a profound lesson to learn and a moment to deeply absorb.
I can only aspire to possess even a fraction of the courage and bravery that this man and the other passengers displayed on that fateful flight.
